Thoroughbreds earn series split with 3-1 win over Chatham

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College ice hockey team scored two late goals to down Chatham University 3-1 and earn a weekend split with the Cougars. Both teams are 1-1 to start the season.
  • Everett Wardle put back a rebound to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 at 18:45 of the first. Connor Wood and Danny Magnuson had the helpers.
  • After a scoreless second period, Chatham tied it on Carson Grainer's goal at 13:17 of the third.
  • Skidmore erased the lead with the team's first power-play goal of the season of the stick of Jacob Franczak at 16:59. Will Dow-Kenny and Connor Wood assisted.
  • With Chatham's goalie out, the Cougars pressured the Thoroughbreds for the final 1:57. Skidmore goalie Blaine Moore had three straight saves as time wore down, then Kaeden Patrick had two blocks and Devon Mussio one. Patrick's second block killed the threat and eventually led to an empty net goal by Ryan Waltman from Franczak at 19:52.
  • Moore ended the game with 25 saves. Nick Bernstein stopped 37 shots for Chatham.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds head to the Wentworth Institute of Technology for a nonleague game Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
