Thoroughbreds fall short in spirited match with RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's volleyball team mounted a late fifth-set rally, but it was not enough as the Thoroughbreds fell to visiting RIT (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 15-13) in both team's Liberty League finale on Friday.
 
  • Skidmore (8-15, 2-6 Liberty League) was eliminated from postseason contention with the defeat.
  • RIT (13-16, 5-3 Liberty League) clinched the fourth seed and a home First Round match next week.
  • Chelsea Winegar had 12 kills and 10 digs to lead Skidmore.
  • Elizabeth Miller collected a career high 27 digs.
  • Sophie Sacco and Jo Blanco each had seven kills.
  • The Thoroughbreds dominated the net, out blocking the Tigers 15-5. Sacco had eight blocks, while Alex Estey had seven and Audrey Powell posted six.
  • Powell also had 16 assists.
  • Liv Benard had a match high 28 kills for RIT. Sydney Neff tallied 56 assists.
  • The Thoroughbreds rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the first set and scored the game's final five points, four of which on Tiffany Flores serves, to win the set. Flores had one ace in the run and four on the match.
  • The fourth set win was much the same. Skidmore trailed early, fought back, and won by scoring for of the final five points.
  • RIT raced to a 6-0 advantage in the fifth set and led 8-2 when the squads switched sides. The Tigers led by five, 13-8, when Skidmore made a run at it. Grace Aronson and Blanco kills brought the Thoroughbreds back to within two. A Skidmore service error out of an RIT timeout gave the visitors match point. The Thoroughbreds closed the gap to one with another kill by Blanco and an RIT hitting error before Bernard ended it with a kill.  
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore will celebrate its six seniors on Saturday with games against Sage 12 p.m. and Potsdam (2 p.m.) to round out the season.
