Thoroughbreds drop opener in OT, 2-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College ice hockey team lost a tight 2-1 overtime nonleague contest to Chatham University Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. It was the opening game for both teams.
  • Nick Cyprian scored off a rebound at 1:01 of the overtime for the winner. Skidmore goalie Tate Brandon made the original save on Caden Smith's original shot, but the Cougars won the rebound battle for the game-winner. Aidan Girduckis had the additional assist.
  • It was a defensive game for the first two periods. The teams combined for only seven shots on goal in the first period. Play opened up a bit in the second period with both teams coming up with scoring chances, but Brandon had 12 saves and Chatham goalie Ricardo Gonzalez 13 to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Cougars broke through at 2:14 of the third period on a defensive zone turnover. Smith scored from Chris Dusek. Skidmore fought back and tied it on a short-handed goal by Thomas Finck. Finck stopped a Cougar breakout, took controlof the puck and skated through two defenseman before firing the puck past Gonzalez for the equalizer at 14:43.
  • Chatham had a 29-28 shot advantage. Brandon finished with 27 saves, as did Gonzalez.
  • The Thoroughbreds were 0-2 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-5.
  • NEXT UP: The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Skidmore Class of 2023.
