Skidmore splits marathon day to close weekend

 
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's volleyball team went 1-1 in a pair of five-set non-league matches at Clarkson on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds went the distance and defeated Bates (25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 22-25, 16-14) before falling to SUNY Potsdam 15-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13.
 
Skidmore 3, Bates 2
  • Jo Blanco finished with 16 blocks to lead Skidmore.
  • Chelsea Winegar had 14 kills and 17 digs.
  • Grace Aronson put down 11 kills and matched Alex Estey for the match high with six blocks.
  • Bella Klosterman, Estey, and Tiffany Flores all had two aces.
  • Elizabeth Miller tallied 21 digs. Flores had 17.
  • Skidmore won the first set by five, the widest margin in any game during the match.
  • The Thoroughbreds trailed by two, 19-17, in the second set before going on a 7-1 run to bring set point. Bates scored three to close the deficit to one, but Powell closed it up with a kill.
  • Skidmore fought a set point in the third and got itself to match point, but Bates scored the set's final three points to force a fourth.
  • The Thoroughbreds clinched the contest on match point number three in the fifth set on an Estey ace.
 
Potsdam 3, Skidmore 2
  • After winning the first set, the second through fourth games were played to 25-21 scores. The Bears captures the second and kept the match alive in the fourth.
  • In the fifth set, Potsdam was in the driver's seat after scoring seven of the first eight points.
  • Skidmore got to within one, 14-13, after fending off three consecutive match points.
  • Blanco had 18 kills to finish the day with 34. She also had three blocks.
  • Estey had 15 kills and five blocks.
  • Winegar put down nine kills and 12 digs.
  • Sophie Sacco contributed three blocks.
  • Miller racked up 25 digs.
NEXT UP: Skidmore closes the regular season by hosting the Skidmore Invitational. The first match of the weekend is a league tilt vs. RIT on Friday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. The Thoroughbreds can clinch a playoff spot with a win.
