Second chances payoff for Thoroughbreds in 7-3 win over Southern Maine

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's hockey team put up a season-high seven goals in a 7-3 New England Hockey Conference win over University of Southern Maine Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The win keeps Skidmore (13-7-1, 8-5-1 NEHC) in fourth place, only one regulation-time three-point win behind leader Hobart. The teams play each other Feb. 5 in Geneva. Southern Maine is 7-8-1 and 5-5-1 NEHC.
 
The Thoroughbreds scored five goals on rebounds, firing 48 shots on USM goalie Mason Palmer.
 
Callahan Johnson and Kaeden Patrick had two goals each, with Johnson adding an assist. Jack Strauss, Thomas Finck, and Devon Mussio accounted for the other goals. Mike Gelatt, Will Dow-Kenny and Zach Lindewirth each had two assists.
 
Skidmore jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead. Strauss opened the scoring 1:21 from Austin Rook and Kyle Delmaestro. The Thoroughbreds closed the period two goals in 14 seconds. Johnson from Dow-Kenny and Lindewirth at 18:13 and Mussio from Everett Wardle at 18:27.
 
The Huskies scored three times in the first 6:43 of the second period to tie it 3-3. The Thoroughbreds responded with three tallies of their own to open a 6-3 lead. Finck got it started at 7:20 from Johnson and Lindewirth. Johnson made it 5-3 at 10:35 from Mussio and Dow-Kenny. Patrick closed the period with his 10th of the season at 15:54 from Gelatt.
 
Patrick picked-up his 11th goal at 8:16 of the third with Reid Russell and Gelatt earning the helpers.
 
Skidmore had a solid 48-29 shot advantage. Blaine Moore improved to 4-0 with 26 saves.
 
The Thoroughbreds have four regular-season games remaining, starting with the program's first-ever game at Elmira College on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.
