Brewers rally past Thoroughbreds for 66-57 win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Vassar College used an 18-1 run to overcame a nine-point second half deficit on the way to a 66-57 win over Skidmore College in Liberty League men's basketball Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
 
It was a bittersweet homecoming for the shorthanded Thoroughbreds who were playing home for the first time in 41 days.
 
Skidmore is 5-4 overall and 1-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar is 10-3 and 6-1.
 
Greg Skoric had a career night with 15 points, 21 rebounds, and seven blocks. It was his second career 20+ rebound game and only two short of the program record of 23 set in 1993 by Akil Screen vs. Division I Central Connecticut. His seven blocks are only one off the team record of eight done twice in 1983 by Al Barker.
 
Ty Lamport scored 20 points and had seven rebounds and three assists. Riley Greene added 11 points and five assists.
 
Avni Mustafaj led Vassar with 21 points. Zach Johnson had a double/double with 10 points and 17 rebounds and Ethan Ellis scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting.
 
The Thoroughbreds led 33-26 at the half behind 12 points from Skoric and nine from Lamport.
 
Skidmore stretched the lead to nine, 40-31 with 14:38 to play. The Brewers then went on the 18-1 run and held The Thoroughbreds without a field goal for more than 9:00 until a Tautvydas Kupstas three at the 5:07 mark.
 
Skidmore kept in it, getting as close as five, 59-54 on a Lamport three with :57 to play. Vassar then went 7-8 from the line over the final minute to preserve the 66-57 win.
 
The Thoroughbreds' next game is Jan. 18 at Hobart College at 2 p.m., a rescheduled contest from Jan. 11.
