Thoroughbreds knock off Brewers in four sets to begin conference play

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Zoe Beals had 15 kills in leading the Skidmore College women's volleyball team to a four-set victory (25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 25-11) over Vassar College to begin Liberty League play on Friday evening.
 
Skidmore improves to 5-7 overall. Vassar drops to 2-6.
 
The squads alternated set wins before Skidmore captured the third and fourth sets to clinch it, both by 25-21 scores. Vassar jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set three, but Skidmore won 6-of-7 points on two occasions to take the lead for good.
 
Chelsea Winegar finished with seven kills and 13 digs. Sophie Sacco also had seven kills, while Grace Aronson finished with six and Audrey Powell pitched in five. Powell also had 26 assists and Jessica Shulman had 10.
 
The Brewers (.182) out-hit the Thoroughbreds (.153), but Skidmore had 13 aces to Vassar's five. Shulman and Powell each had four to lead the match.
 
Claire Basler-Chang had 16 kills to lead Vassar, while Hailey Hayes followed close behind with 15. Sara Ehnstrom posted 20 digs for the Brewers.     

Skidmore returns to play Saturday, Sept. 25 on the road at Bard College.
