Skidmore returns to play vs. Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team played for the first time in 18 days, dropping an 11-10 Liberty League decision to Vassar College in the snow Wednesday night.
 
The Thoroughbreds are 1-2 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Brewers are 1-3 and 1-3.
 
Ryan Madalone led the Thoroughbreds with three goals. Charlie Kessler had two goals and an assist, Brandon Reilly scored two goals and Matt Pinckney had a goal and two assists. Thomas Kelly had six ground balls and five caused turnovers and John Fitzpatrick won 15 of 24 faceoffs, picking-up seven ground balls and scoring a goal.
 
 Maximus Albanese led the Brewers with six goals and an assist.
 
Skidmore took the early 3-0 lead on a goal by Kessler and then two from Madalone. Vassar cut it to 3-1 on Troy Santise's goal at 6:56 of the first. The Thoroughbreds responded with goals from Madalone and Charlie McFadden to go up 5-1. Albanese scored two quick goals to get the Brewers to within two, 5-3. Reilly made it 6-3 with 26 seconds left in the quarter from Kessler. Fitzpatrick won the faceoff and scored five seconds later for a 7-3 lead after one.
 
Vassar took advantage of a pair of man-up goals to go into the half down 8-5. The Brewers scored the first two of the third to inch to within two at the end of the third 9-7.
 
Albanese scored three straight to open the fourth quarter and give Vassar a 10-9 lead. James Nichols extended the lead to 11-9 with 7:37 to play. Pinckney cut it to 11-10 from Thomas Kelly at 5:35, but the Brewer defense held for the one goal win.
 
Skidmore had a 39-38 shot advantage. Christopher Downey had 13 saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Aiden Gallagher stopped 12 shots for Vassar.
 
Skidmore is at RPI on April 24 at 1 p.m.
