Thoroughbreds open with 16-11 win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team got goals from seven different players on the way to a 16-11 win over Eastern Connecticut Saturday evening at Wachenheim Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds start 1-0, while the 3-1 Warriors lose for the first time.
 
Amelia Bassett and Avery Geddes led Skidmore with four goals each. Bassett added an assist for a five-point day. Gabriella Modesti had three goals and an assist, while Madelyn Marr had two goals and two assists in the pair's college debut.
 
Becca Leopold had a team-high three assists. Lara Strunk contributed six draw controls, a goal, and two ground balls. Charlotte Cass had three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
 
Caroline Stent and Tristan Kijak scored three goals each for Eastern.
 
Skidmore carved out an early 5-1 lead. The teams exchanged goals with the Warriors scoring the final two goals of the first half and the first goal of the second half to cut the Thoroughbred lead to one, 8-7.
 
Skidmore went on a 6-2 run to take command 14-9 with 5:37 left. Geddes and Modesti had two goals each in the run.
 
The Thoroughbreds had a 33-24 shot advantage. Phoebe Beshlian had eight saves in net for the win.
 
Skidmore returns to action March 24 with a 4 p.m. home game against Castleton.
