Overtime goal propels Thoroughbreds into Thanksgiving Invite Championship game

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Mike Gelatt scored with 26 seconds to play in overtime to propel the Skidmore College hockey team into the 15th Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament championship game with a 4-3 win over Chatham University Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds will face Connecticut College in the championship game at 4 p.m. Sunday. Conn College beat Brockport 3-2. Chatham and Brockport will play in the 1 p.m. consolation game.

This will be the ninth championship appearance for Skidmore (3-3-1). The Thoroughbreds have won three times, including a 4-2 win over Tufts in the 2019 title game.

Skidmore opened a 3-0 lead. Ethan Heidepriem won a faceoff in the Chatham zone that went to Reid Russell who quickly got it to Will Dow-Kenny for a rocket shot from just inside the blue line for the 1-0 lead at 6:36. Heidepriem took advantage of the Cougar defensive zone turnover to make it 2-0 at 18:26 from Gelatt.

Kaeden Patrick upped the advantage to 3-0 with his fifth of the season at 2:22 of the second period. Danny Magnuson and Everett Wardle were credited with the helpers.

Chatham scored a pair of second period power-play goals to cut it to 3-2.

The score stayed that way until the Cougars tied it just after Skidmore killed off a late third period penalty at 16:58.

The Thoroughbreds controlled play in the overtime. Devin Mussio started the winning play, getting the puck out of the defensive zone before leaving the ice for a change. Gelatt and Wardle exchanged passes, with Gelatt taking the winning shot, beating Chatham goalie Ricardo Gonzalez low glove side for his first goal of the season.

Skidmore had a 37-21 shot advantage, including a 4-0 edge in overtime.

Blaine Moore had 18 saves for his first collegiate win. Gonzalez finished with 33.
