Thoroughbreds drop tight battle with Tigers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's volleyball team fell on the road at RIT 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore falls to 9-10 (2-2 Liberty League). Meanwhile, RIT remains unbeaten in the conference with a 4-0 record and bumps its overall mark to 16-2.

The Tiger's two-pronged attack of Taylor Higgins and Katie Hobler combined for 33 kills. Zoe Beals had 16 kills to lead the Thoroughbreds.

RIT's 8-2 run in the first set gave enough breathing room to withstand Skidmore's late comeback attempt. Similarly in the second set, the Tigers won seven-straight points in the early-goings which afforded them to withstand an 8-2 run from the Thoroughbreds. Tied at 18, RIT won seven of the final eight points to win relatively comfortably.

RIT got out to a 10-3 lead in the third set, but Skidmore fought back and eventually went on an 11-3 run to get to set point. RIT scored four straight to reach 23, but an attack error gave Skidmore the set victory. Skidmore held an early lead in the fourth set, and it went back-and-forth until while ahead 20-19, the Tigers got four points in-a-row to reach match point. A Higgins kill three plays later sealed the win.

Chelsea Winegar had nine kills and 15 digs for Skidmore. Grace Aronson added six kills with a block. Audrey Powell had 28 assists and three service aces. Elizabeth Miller collected 17 digs. RIT had 17 aces, led by Hailey Blixt with seven and Kiana Walker with four. Skidmore hit .188 (43 kills with 18 errors) while RIT had 48 kills but finished with 25 errors and a .164 hitting percentage.

Skidmore is back at home on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. to host Union College.
