SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College women's volleyball team finished a perfect 3-0 at the Skidmore Classic with three-set sweeps over New Jersey City University and Russell Sage College on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds, coming off a thrilling victory Friday evening, defeated NJCU, 25-9, 25-19, 25-20, and Sage, 25-11, 25-16, 25-5. Â
Skidmore is now 9-8 on the season. NJCU went 2-1 on the weekend and sits at 10-3. Sage dropped all three of its matches to fall to 4-14. Friday's opponent, MCLA, went 1-2. Â
Zoe Beals led Skidmore versus NJCU with 14 kills.
Ella Harris, and
Jo Blanco both had seven. Beals finished with a .303 attack percentage (four errors on 33 attempts) while Harris hit .211 (three errors on 19 attempts) and Blanco hit at a .385 clip (two errors on 13 attempts).
Audrey Powell had 20 assists and
Jessica Shulman finished with 15. Powell, Shulman, and
Chelsea Winegar had two service aces each.
Grace Aronson finished with five blocks, one solo.
Skidmore jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in set one and later scored the final nine points to win with general ease. The team's exchanged short runs in set two, but Skidmore went on a 5-0 run to coast to the two-set lead. NJCU jolted to a 6-2 advantage in the third set, but the Thoroughbreds withstood the pressure to eventually get nine-straight points, leading to a 7-2 run to close it out.
Rachel Pharo had nine kills for NJCU and Sydney Lore finished with 16 assists.
In the win over Sage, Winegar used a .615 attack percentage (eight kills with no errors on 13 attempts) and
Sophie Sacco finished with seven kills without an error on just nine attempts for a .778 percentage. Beals put down seven kills and Aronson had six kills as the Thoroughbreds finished with a .398 attack percentage as a team while managing to keep Sage in the negatives.
For the second match in a row, Shulman dished out 20 assists. Powell had 10 assists, while
Elizabeth Miller and
Noa Berger contributed five each. Winegar also added four more aces and eight digs. Aronson tacked on three more blocks including one solo. Â
A 13-2 Skidmore run in the middle of the first set pushed the Thoroughbreds into the lead. Set two went back-and-froth before a similar 12-2 run gave Skidmore a big cushion. The Thoroughbreds didn't look back in set three for the comfortable victory. Â Â
Emma Parkington led Sage with six kills. Stacia Walker had 10 assists for the Gators.
Skidmore jumps back into league play with matches Friday, Oct. 8 at Ithaca and Saturday, Oct. 9 at RIT.
