ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Despite overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second half, the Skidmore College field hockey team fell to Rochester, 3-2, after Amanda Strenk converted a penalty stroke with under two minutes on the clock in the fourth quarter.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-8 and 1-3 in the Liberty League. Rochester is 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Carrie Hughes scored both goals for Skidmore in the bookends of the third quarter. She scored 51 seconds into the second half with the assist by Sofia Marshall, who set up the tap in. Hughes got her second of the contest and fifth of the season with 1:15 left in the third quarter on a scramble in front. Skidmore dominated the third quarter, outshooting Rochester 6-1 and earning five penalty corners.
Juney Lee put Rochester ahead at the 2:40 mark on a penalty corner. Mara Heppard picked up the assist. Lee scored again early in the second quarter on a breakaway.
The teams held firm until late in regulation, when Rochester was awarded the penalty stroke after it was ruled that a ball bound for the goal hit the foot of a Skidmore defender. Strenk buried her 18th goal of the season on the penalty stoke.
Jess Gaetgens made five saves for the Thoroughbreds. Lauren Ruggiero had a key defensive save in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied. Helen Schmitter game on in relief in the fourth quarter in goal for the Yellowjackets and earned the win without making a save. Abigail Walrond made seven saves in 45 minutes of work.
Skidmore is back home on Sunday, Oct. 17 to close Celebration Weekend at 3 p.m. versus William Smith College.
