Late goal moves Herons past Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— William Smith College came from behind in the second half for a 3-2 Liberty League field hockey win over Skidmore College, Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park.
 
The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Herons are 5-8 and 1-4.
 
William Smith opened the scoring when Kate Barilla converted a penalty stroke after time had expired in the first quarter.
 
Skidmore tied it when Bella Faber notched her third of the season from Sofia Marshall after a penalty corner.
 
Mariah Redler put the Thoroughbreds in front 2-1 when she beat traffic in front of the net for her team-high ninth goal of the season at 39:12. CC wetter assisted. William Smith came right back when Emily Leonard got behind the Skidmore defense and scored her third of the year from Rebecca Mantione. Leonard got the winner at 54:10 when she put back a rebound.
 
Skidmore threatened over the final five minutes, but couldn't solve the Heron defense.
 
Shots were even at 10, while the Thoroughbreds had a slight 7-5 edge in corners.
 
Jess Gaetgens had six saves for Skidmore, while Kristen McCormick stopped four shots for William Smith.
 
The Thoroughbreds travel to Oneonta on Oct 20 for a 5 p.m. game.
