BABSON PARK, Mass.— Babson scored 4:09 into overtime as the sixth ranked Beavers rallied for a 3-2 win over visiting Skidmore College in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action inside the Babson Skating Center.
Skidmore slips to 11-9-4 overall and 7-8-2 in the NEHC. Babson improves to 18-4-2 overall and 13-3-1 in league play. The victory also helped the hosts secured the second seed in the upcoming NEHC Tournament.
Owen Campbell and sophomore
Reid Russell each scored, while
Nicholas Charron recorded two assists for the Thoroughbreds.
Brandon Kasel was superb in defeat stopping 44 shots, including six in overtime.
Chris Rooney's first career goal was the game winner. Nick Rosa and Ryan Campbell both scored for the Beavers. Goaltender Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) finished with 29 saves to extend his personal unbeaten streak to nine games.
Babson took a 1-0 lead when Campbell scored on a blast from the left point for his second goal of the year at 15:11 of the first period. The Beavers had a pair of play opportunities and outshot Skidmore 20-9 in the second period but found themselves headed to the intermission deadlocked at 1-1 after Russell picked up his fifth goal of the year scoring six seconds into a power play at the 7:54 mark.
Babson was whistled for a five-minute major at 8:09 of the third period and the Thoroughbreds took advantage as Campbell jammed home the rebound of a shot by
William Brochu to go in front 2-1 at 10:39. The Beavers pulled even just under six minutes later though, as Rosa flipped a centering pass from Holland over Kasel's left shoulder and under the bar for his 12th goal of the year.
Arvanitis denied Skidmore's
Avery Steele on an odd-man rush 27 seconds into the extra session, while Kasel made four saves over the final three minutes of regulation and six more in overtime before Rooney scored from the slot off a feed from Corrigan with 51.1 seconds to go.
Babson, which finished 0-for-3 on the power play, finished with a 47-31 edge in shots. The Thoroughbreds scored twice on four power play opportunities.
