RPI remains unbeaten in league play with 78-65 win over Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team could not find the right answers against RPI in a 78-65 Liberty League loss at the Williamson Center on Friday.

The Thoroughbreds are 6-12 overall and 5-6 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers have won 16 straight for a  16-2 overall and  11-0 league record.

Ty Lamport led the way for Skidmore with 22 points, three rebounds, a bock, and a steal. Greg Skoric tallied a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds alongside one block. Riley Greene contributed 12 points.

Patrick Mahoney led the Engineers with 22 points and four rebounds. Dom Black contributed 20 points and five rebounds, while Will Rubin scored 11 off the bench.

Skidmore started off hot as Lamport hit a three pointer to start the game, followed by another good jumper to put Skidmore up 5-1 in the first two minutes. However, RPI quickly found its groove and went on a 13-0 scoring run. By the end of half, the Thoroughbreds were trailing 32-25.

The teams went back-and-forth to open the second half before Mahoney scored five straight points for a 42-31 RPI lead four minutes in. Skidmore guard Greene scored seven of the next nine points to make it a 44-38 game and Skoric got it down to 46-42 with four points in a row, but Rensselaer continued to have answers.

Will Rubin scored from behind the arc and Mitchel Wayand hit a pair of free throws for a 56-46 RPI lead with 8:46 to play, Mason Memmelaar's two free throws put the score at 58-47 two minutes later. The margin got to 18 points before settling at 13 when the horn sounded.
