Skidmore falls at home to Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Despite a late second-half comeback, the Skidmore College men's basketball team came up short in an 86-77 Liberty League loss to Union College Saturday evening at the Williamson Center.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 6-11 and 5-5 in league play, while the Dutchmen are 10-5 and 7-3.

Riley Greene led Skidmore with 21 points and had a team-high six assists. Greene shot was 7-12 (58%) from the floor, including 4-6 from three-point range. Pat Gallagher scored a season-high 18 points and had five rebounds. Ty Lamport contributed 13 points and four assists.

The Dutchmen were led by Mike Concannon who finished with 21 points. Jackson Mannix added 14 points and Mike Manley scored 13.

Union quickly jumped ahead of the Thoroughbreds going up 10-3 in the first two minutes. Skidmore responded with a 10-0 run capped by a Riley three for a 13-10 lead. A Jordan Cole three put the Thoroughbreds in front 16-12 with 13:47 to play in the half. Union came back with an 11-2 rally to go ahead, 23-18. The Dutchmen would extend the advantage to 45-37 at the break.

The Dutchmen maintained a comfortable lead for most of the second half. With 5:57 remaining in the game, Temi George made a good layup to give the Dutchmen their largest lead of the game at 74-59. Shortly after, Skidmore went on a 8-0 scoring run off of two back-to-back three pointers by Tautvydas Kupstas and Greene to put Skidmore within five points, 77-72 with 2:43 left. Union hit six of seven free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 86-77 win.

"Tough loss," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. "I was proud of the fight in the second half but we didn't come out with necessary energy and focus that you need to win a Saturday game.  I thought Union played with a greater sense of energy early and we turned it on to late."

The Thoroughbreds host Rensselaer on Jan. 31 in a 7:30 contest.
