Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Engineers hold off Thoroughbreds

TROY, N.Y. – Five players scored in double figures as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 74-63 win over Skidmore College at East Campus Arena.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-9 and 2-3. The Engineers are 5-0 record and 10-2 overall.

Ty Lamport led Skidmore with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting, along with a game-high six rebounds. Tautvydas Kupstas also connected on 7 of 12 shots, including four three-pointers, for 18 points while playing all 40 minutes.

Will Rubin led RPI with 17 points with the help of three long three-pointers. Dom Black had 13 points with five rebounds, five assists and three steals and Kevin Davis and Patrick Mahoney both scored a dozen points. Mason Memmelaar had 11 points and tied Black for the team-high in boards with five.

The game was a one-possession contest up until the midway point of the first half when RPI hit a three-pointer for a 23-17 lead with 8:55 to play. Riley Greene and Kupstas answered to get the visitors to within 23-22, but a five straight RPI points made it 28-22 with just under six minutes left. Kupstas and Rubin traded triples and RPI scored the next five points for a 10-point margin, which was the margin going into the locker room at the break (37-27).

A Greg Skoric dunk pulled Skidmore to within eight points three minutes into the second half, but the Thoroughbreds could not get any closer than that in the final 17 minutes.
"Proud of the effort especially by the guys down the stretch," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke.  "Unfortunately we just didn't make enough plays to win on the road.
"I still believe in this group, we have a long way to go and lots of basketball left.  We just need to get back to practice."
Skidmore heads North to take on Clarkson Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
