Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Thoroughbreds hold off Thomas for 2-1 win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Jordan Mjaatvedt had her first multi-goal game to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Thomas College Saturday morning at Wagner Field.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 3-4, while the Terriers are 2-4. The game was rescheduled from August 30.

Carrie Hughes carried the ball into the box on a two-on-one, placing a perfect pass to Mjaatvedt who beat a sprawling MacKenzie Oberholzer for the first goal just 1:16 into the contest.

Thomas evened the score 1-1 at 9:02 when Brittany Gregoire lofted a high floater into the cage. Allie Gregoire assisted on the play which began with a corner.

The Terriers nearly scored at the end of the second quarter. A penalty corner with 16 seconds challenged the Thoroughbreds, but Natalie Metzger made a big defensive save on a Britney Gergoire shot followed by a tough save by Maddy Carre as time expired.

Mjaatvedt put Skidmore in front early in the third quarter. She worked her way through traffic and slid the ball past Oberholzer at 34:35.

The Thoroughbreds kept the Terriers off the board the rest of the way, limiting Terrier chances in the fourth quarter and killing off a 5:00 yellow card given at 48:56.

Thomas outshot Skidmore 21-13 and had an 11-7 penalty advantage.

Maddy Carre earned the win in relief of starter Jess Gaetgens. Carre had four saves, including two during the fourth quarter penalty. Gaetgens stopped eight shots over the first 24:15.

Oberholzer had nine saves for Thomas.

Sofia Marshall and Metzger had defensive saves for Skidmore.

The Thoroughbreds hit the road to play number one and defending national champion Middlebury College on Sept. 24 in a 6:30 p.m. game.
