Skidmore advances with 24-19 shootout win over Vassar

Thoroughbreds advance to Liberty League Semifinal

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior attack Cas Szwajkowski tallied eight goals, leading the fourth-seeded Skidmore College women's lacrosse team to a 24-19 shootout victory over fifth-seeded Vassar, at Wachenheim Field Tuesday afternoon.
 
The 43 combined goals are the most in program history. The previous record was 39 (2013 vs. Mount Holyoke, 20-19 OT loss and 2007 vs. St. Lawrence, 21-18 loss). Skidmore (12-5) advances to take on top-seeded William Smith on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Vassar finishes the season at 8-8.
 
Shots favored the Thoroughbreds, 47-31. Skidmore also held a 28-16 edge in draw controls. Vassar led the way in ground balls, 26-22. Skidmore went 13-for-17 on clearing attempts and converted on six free position shots. Szwajkowski led the way with the aforementioned eight goals, adding one assist. She tallied six goals in the first half alone and finished with a game-high 14 draw controls. Grace Connerty added a career-best five goals, Anna Boogaerts added three goals and three assists, and Natalie LaBeau added two goals and two assists for four points. Lilla Seymour and Shelby Boland each scored twice.
 
Amanda Orvis picked up four ground balls, while also tallying a goal and assist. Hirsch also tallied a goal and assist, and she led the way with three caused turnovers. LaBeau, Charlotte Cass, and Caroline Kenlon each caused two turnovers. Kenlon also made six saves for her 10th victory of the season.
 
Caeli Porette (five goals, two assists) and Kelly Pushie (four goals, three assists) led the Brewers with seven points each. Porette led the team with seven draw controls. Jackie Molloy took the loss, making 15 saves.
 
Skidmore and Vassar traded over the first seven minutes. Szwajkowksi got on the board with her 79th goal of the season at the 22:23 mark, tying the game at three. Vassar then took advantage of a Skidmore yellow card, as Ashley Roberts tallied the woman-up goal to take the lead. It was the first for three straight for the Brewers, who took a 6-3 lead.
 
Szwajkowski and the Thoroughbreds went to work midway through the half. She scored three goals, with Boland adding the fourth, taking a 7-6 lead with 10:27 to go. Fiona MacLeod answered for Vassar, but Skidmore tacked two more to take a 9-7 lead.
 
The scoring picked up from there. Tessa Waters broke the Skidmore run with Vassar's second woman-up goal of the game, cutting the deficit in half. The Thoroughbreds then ended the half on a 4-1 run, capped by a Connerty goal in the final seconds to take a 13-9 lead.
 
Skidmore began the half with two more goals, taking its largest lead of the game at 15-9. The Brewers didn't quit, as Pushie scored back-to-back goals to lead a 6-2 Vassar run. Skidmore's lead was slashed to two, at 17-15 with 16:57 to go.
 
Skidmore held Vassar at bay, outscoring the Brewers 6-2 over the next eight minutes to regain the six-goal advantage. After Vassar scored, LaBeau tallied Skidmore's final goal at the 5:03 mark. Alessandra Fable tallied the final goal to complete the scoring at 24-19.
