Second half run carries top seed William Smith past Skidmore

GENEVA. N.Y.—Top seed and 14th ranked William Smith College broke open a 6-6 game with 10 second-half goals on the way to a 16-9 win over Skidmore College in the Liberty League women's lacrosse semifinals Saturday at Boswell Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds finish the season at 12-6, while the Herons take a 16-2 record into Sunday's championship game against the winner of the Ithaca/Clarkson semifinal.

Cas Szwajkowski led the Thoroughbreds with four goals, moving her program record to 90 for the season. She finishes her career with a record 255 goals and 23 assists for a record 278 points.

Emily Hirsh had two goals and six draw controls, while Amanda Orvis scored a goal and had an assist. Grace Connerty and Shelby Boland scored single goals each. Amanda Boogaerts contributed five draws.

Kelsey Williams lead William Smith with five goals and an assist. Rachel Slagle and Nicki Santora added three goals each.

Skidmore scored the game's first three goals, quickly erasing memories of William Smith's 17-5win last week. Hirsch (26:22), Szwajkowski (21:15) and Orvis (16:22) made it 3-0 before the Herons broke through on a Williams' goal at 15:14.

The teams traded goals until William Smith strung three together to tie it 5-5. Szwajkowski scored a diving goal to make it 6-5 with 3:09 left. The Herons tied it on a free position at 1:04 for a 6-6 tie at the half.

William Smith scored the first three goals of the second half to open a 9-6 lead. Boland converted a free position at 22:26 to cut it to 9-7. The Herons scored two more for an 11-7 lead. Szwajkowski got it to three, 11-8 at 17:54, but William Smith tallied five straight on the way to the 16-9 final.

The Herons had a 35-22 shot advantage, while the Thoroughbreds had a 17-14 ground ball edge.

Caroline Kenlon stopped eight shots in net for Skidmore, while Olivia Hofmann had nine saves for William Smith.
