CANTON, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team kept its playoff hopes alive with a Liberty League split with St. Lawrence University Sunday evening.
The Saints won the first game in extra innings 5-4, with the Thoroughbreds coming back to take the second 3-2.
Skidmore is 17-12 overall and 7-9 in league play, while the Saints are 7-23 and 5-13. The teams play another pair Monday afternoon.
Catcher Pat Geiger hit home runs in each game to tie and break the season record of eight set in 2001 by Brian Neary. Geiger has nine with six games to play. He has 16 career round trippers, one off the record shared by Neary and Ross Aresco.
GAME 1
Geiger hit a solo shot in the first inning to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead. Will Snyder made it 2-0 with an RBI single. The Saints tied it in the second with a pair of runs and took the lead with a run in the third.
Skidmore scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth for a 4-3 lead. The Saints tied it in the bottom of the seventh and won it in with a two-out walk off single in the eighth.
Jay Gamboa (6-2) lost for only the second time this season. He went the entire way, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He struck out four and didn't allow a walk.
GAME 2
Skidmore went in front and stayed there in the second game. Geiger homered on 1-2 pitch for a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
Will Potter stole home on a double steal with
Matt Chipkin for a 2-0 lead.
The Thoroughbreds went up 3-0 when
Justin LaRose was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Christian Reenstiern came on in with one-out in the seventh to preserve the win with his fifth save on the season.
Jacob Berish (2-2) earned the win. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Potter was 3-4 and
Jake Hardy went 3-3.
