SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior attack
Cas Szwajkowski set the single-season points record on Saturday, leading the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team as it fell to 14
th-ranked William Smith by a 17-5 score at Wachenheim Field.
It was the season finale for both teams. Skidmore (11-5, 7-3 Liberty League) earns the fourth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, and will host No. 5 Vassar on Tuesday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m. William Smith (15-2, 10-0 Liberty League) finishes the league schedule undefeated and will await the Skidmore/Vassar winner in Geneva on Saturday, May 4.
Szwajkowski, having already set school records this season in career goals, career points, goals in a game, free position goals (season), and goals (season), set another record on Senior Day, surpassing Lindsay Stavola's 2010 mark of 84. She tallied two goals to bring her season total to a league-leading 85.
Shelby Boland,
Anna Boogaerts, and
Emily Hirsch also tallied goals for the Thoroughbreds. Boland and
Lilla Seymour added assists. Hirsch also won seven draws.
Ellie Daly led the defense with three caused turnovers.
Caroline Kenlon made six saves in the first 41:18. Nick Eckert played the final 18:12, picking up one ground ball.
Kelsey Williams and Ellie Burns combined for 12 points to lead William Smith, tallying seven goals and five assists. Olivia Hoffmann made four saves in 39:36 to earn the victory. Jules Kennedy made two saves in the final 20:24.
William Smith took control early with five unanswered goals in the first 11 minutes. Szwajkowski tied the points mark with a great individual effort, putting a spin move on the William Smith defender and finishing past Hoffmann. Williams answered for the Herons, before Szwajkowski tallied the record-setting goal, cutting the deficit to four at the 16:10 mark.
William Smith finished the half on a 6-1 run, with the lone Skidmore goal coming from Hirsch. The Herons took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
William Smith put the game away in the second half, scoring five straight to take a 17-3 lead. Skidmore fought back in the final 7:01, as Boogaerts scored on a man-down goal and Boland tallied one on a feed by Seymour, for the 17-5 final score.
After the game, the Thoroughbreds celebrated the senior class of Szwajkowski, Boogaerts, Daly,
Gianna Muscari,
Natalie LaBeau,
Frankie White Levin,
Erin Mah, and
Zoe Rafalowski-Houseman.
Total shots were close as William Smith held a 25-21 advantage, but the Herons held a 23-11 advantage in shots on target. Skidmore was 8-for-11 on clear opportunities, holding William Smith to 65 percent (15-for-23) on clears.
