Skidmore bounces back with 17-6 victory at SLU

Szwajkowski breaks single-season goals record

CANTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team bounced back with a dominating performance on the road Saturday, defeating St. Lawrence by a 17-6 score in Liberty League action at Hall/Leet Stadium.
 
Skidmore (11-4, 7-2 Liberty League) clinches a home playoff game in the league tournament for the second straight year. The Thoroughbreds can finish either third or fourth in the league standings. St. Lawrence (4-10, 2-6) drops its second straight match.
 
For the third time this season, Cas Szwajkowski tallied a school record-tying nine goals. In the process, she set the single-season goals record, tallying an impressive 76 goals. The senior broke a record she set back in the 2017 season, when she tallied 69 goals. Her 83 points this season is one shy of the Skidmore record of 84, set by Lindsay Stavola in 2010.
 
Shelby Boland added a pair of goals. Amanda Orvis tallied one goal and two assists for three points, while both Grace Connerty and Emily Hirsch added a goal and assist for two points. Natalie LaBeau, Anna Boogaerts, and Vivian Foley also scored. Hirsch led the defense with two caused turnovers, and she shared the team lead with Szwajkowski and Kathleen Hanna with five draw controls. Nicki Eckert picked up her first win of the season with 10 saves in net. She also picked up two ground balls.
 
Isabel Silvia led the Saints with two goals and three caused turnovers. Olga Lukas made eight saves in the loss.
 
Skidmore and St. Lawrence traded goals in the first 2:26 to begin the game, before the Thoroughbreds slowly jumped ahead with four unanswered goals. It was a low scoring first half, with the Thoroughbreds leading 5-1 after 30 minutes.
 
The Skidmore offense picked up steam in the second half. The Thoroughbreds scored six quick goals in a span of 3:40 to blow the game wide open, taking a commanding 11-1 lead. Foley capped the 7-0 Skidmore run with a man-up goal at the 22:09 mark.
 
St. Lawrence answered with four straight goals, but Szwajkowski ended the run with a free position tally, adding two more to give Skidmore a 15-5 lead. Emma Owens broke the run with a goal at the 6:49 mark, before Skidmore ended the scoring with goals from Szwajkowski and LaBeau.
 
Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence by a 32-28 margin, including a 25-16 margin with shots on target. The Thoroughbreds won 16 of 27 draws and were 18-of-20 in clear attempts.
 
The Thoroughbreds will finish the regular season at home next Saturday, hosting No. 15 William Smith at 4 p.m.
