TROY, N.Y. –
Cas Szwajkowski scored seven goals to lead the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team to its fourth consecutive Liberty League victory, defeating RPI by a 17-12 score at Renwyck Field Tuesday evening.
Skidmore, receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) rankings, improves to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. RPI falls to 5-3 and 2-3.
Szwajkowski tallied her seven goals on seven shots, tallying three or more goals in her eighth consecutive game. She added seven draw controls.
Emily Hirsch added three goals.
Anna Boogaerts and
Amanda Orvis each scored twice.
Natalie LaBeau added a goal and two assists for three points, while
Shelby Boland added two points, via a goal and assist. Hirsch and
Kathleen Hanna added six draw controls.
Caroline Kenlon picked up the victory in cage with five saves, adding seven ground balls.
Michelle Bolger led RPI with five goals. Lauren Guiry added four goals. Aleena Milinski made seven saves in net.
RPI struck first with a pair of goals in the first 1:27. A free position attempt by the Thoroughbreds got them on the board, as LaBeau successful attempt cut the deficit in half. Hirsch later tied the game at two at the 23:07 mark. RPI shortly took the lead with a woman-up goal, before Skidmore took control with three consecutive goals by Szwajkowski, Hirsch, and Orvis.
Trailing 5-3, RPI worked to tie the game with a pair of Bolger goals. Skidmore then took the lead for good with a free-position goal by Orvis. It was the start of a 5-0 run at the tail end of the half, as Skidmore led 10-5. RPI scored near the tail end of the half, but Skidmore led 10-6.
Skidmore once stretched its lead to five after consecutive goals by Szwajkowski and Boogaerts. RPI worked to bring the deficit to within two after a 3-0 run. After winning the following draw control, Hirsch scored on the next possession to give Skidmore a 13-10 lead. Szwajkowski then scored her 41
st of the season to increase the lead to four. The Thoroughbreds outscored RPI 3-2 in the final 11:55 for the final 17-12 score.
Skidmore outshot RPI by a 30-28 margin. The Thoroughbreds were near perfect in transition, converting on 15-of-17 clear attempts. They also won 20 of 31 draw controls.
Skidmore will return to Wachenheim Field on Saturday, hosting Union at noon.
