Skidmore streak snapped at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team saw its season-high five game win streak snapped to Clarkson, falling by a 15-10 score in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.
 
Skidmore, receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) rankings, falls to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in conference action. Clarkson jumps into fourth place in the league standings, improving to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in league.
 
Skidmore jumped out to an early lead in the first five minutes, getting goals from Grace Connerty and Amanda Orvis, 21 seconds apart. Clarkson answered with a 5-0 run, taking a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Anna Boogaerts answered with a free position goal at the 15:06 mark, but Clarkson responded to the Boogaerts goal with four more, taking a commanding 9-3 lead.
 
Skidmore got going to end the opening half. Cas Szwajkowski got on the board with a goal at the 4:29 mark, then Emily Hirsch scored on a deft feed from Shelby Boland. Szwajkowski won the following draw, then quickly scored with 1:32 remaining. The Thoroughbreds had two more chances to cut into the deficit further, but Clarkson goalie Samantha Gladd stopped a pair of shots late as Skidmore went into half trailing 9-6.
 
The Clarkson defense stymied Skidmore throughout much of the second half, and the offense began the period with a pair of goals to take an 11-6 lead. Szwajkowski scored with a woman-down to cut the lead to 11-7, but it was as close as the Thoroughbreds would get. Clarkson pulled further with three consecutive goals to take a 14-7 lead, before Connerty and Hirsh broke the run with goals. Clarkson and Skidmore traded goals in the final minute, leading to the 15-10 final.
 
Szwajkowski led Skidmore with five points, tallying four goals and one assist. She also added five draw controls. Hirsch and Connerty each scored twice, with Hirsch adding three ground balls, eight draw controls, and one caused turnover. Boogaerts and Orvis also scored, with Boland providing an assist. Orvis also added four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Natalie LaBeau tallied four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Caroline Kenlon made one save in the opening 21:45. Nicki Eckert made eight saves in relief.
 
Abby Collins led the Golden Knights with seven points, via four goals and three assists. Sydney Roderick added one goal and three assists. Gladd made 14 saves in net for the victory.
 
Skidmore outshot Clarkson by a 31-29 margin and earned 19 out of 27 draws, despite the score line. Both teams tallied 24 shots on net. Skidmore went 9-for-15 on clearing opportunities, while Clarkson went 18-for-26.
 
Skidmore will look to bounce back in Canton on Saturday, as the Thoroughbreds take on St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
