SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore College women's lacrosse head coach
Elizabeth Ghilardi becomes Skidmore's all-time leader in wins as the Thoroughbreds hold off Williams by a 14-11 score, at Wachenheim Field Sunday afternoon.
Skidmore improves to 10-3 on the season, winning its fifth straight game. Williams falls to 7-6.
Ghilardi earns her 84
th career win, breaking the record of 83 originally set by Jane Misurelli, who coached from 1979-1995. Ghilardi is 84-64 in nine seasons at Skidmore.
Natalie LaBeau and Cas Szwajkowki each tallied five points to lead the Thoroughbreds. LaBeau tallied three goals and two assists, while Szwajkowski added four goals and one assist. Szwajkowski also added three draw controls and five ground balls. Amanda Orvia and
Shelby Boland each tallied two goals and one assist for three points.
Anna Boogaerts also tallied three points, scoring once and assisting twice.
Emily Hirsch tallied a goal and added an assist, while leading the team with five draw controls.
Grace Connerty also scored to complete the Skidmore scoring.
Ellie Daly also caused two turnovers on the defensive end.
Caroline Kenlon was brilliant in net late, stopping eight shots in the second half, finishing with 12 total saves. She also added five ground balls.
Emma TenBarge led Williams with seven goals, adding five ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Kami Cisneros made 11 saves in the effort.
Skidmore and Williams traded goals in the first 28 minutes of the first half, before the Thoroughbreds pulled ahead with a late Szwajkowski goal, taking an 8-7 lead into the first half. Skidmore jumped out with a pair of goals in the second half, taking a 10-7 lead, before the Ephs answered with three straight goals to tie the game at 10.
Williams had a chance to take the lead, as Mason Yonge lined up for a free position attempt at the 15-minute mark, but Kenlon made a crucial save, parrying the chance away. A minute later, Hirsch found LaBeau for the goal, as Skidmore took the lead for good, 11-10. The Thoroughbreds then put the game away with three more goals, before Williams scored in the final two minutes of regulation.
The Thoroughbreds out-shot the Ephs by a 32-30 margin and edged them on the ground ball count, 25-20. Skidmore went 17-for-21 on clear attempts, while Williams went 15-of-18.
Skidmore takes aim at Liberty League action for the rest of the way. The Thoroughbreds will travel north to face Clarkson on Friday, in a 4 p.m. start.
