Skidmore runs away from Keene State, 14-10

Thoroughbreds tally six fourth-quarter goals in comeback effort

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore erupted for six goals in the fourth quarter, rallying from a two-goal deficit to defeat Keene State 14-10, in Skidmore's inaugural Vs. Cancer game at Wachenheim Field on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

Skidmore improves to 3-5 on the season, while Keene State falls to 2-5.

It was a team effort for the Thoroughbreds in the comeback victory. Eric Megnia led Skidmore offensively with three goals. Garrett Munck, Ward Mahoney, Jason Shlonsky, and Alex Miller each scored twice. Miller added two assists for four points, while Mahoney added an assist for three points. Will Lukas tallied a season-best four assists. Ryan Madalone, Hudson Miller, and Colby Farnham also entered the scoring book with goals.

Defensively, Nick DeBlasio and Ben Glidden caused two turnovers apiece. Nine different Thoroughbreds caused a turnover in the game. Tim Rahill stopped 14 shots in a heady effort, making a pair of crucial saves in the fourth quarter to ward off the Keene State attack. He also led the team with five ground balls. Benjamin Kacher played in the final 33 seconds of regulation. Skidmore outshot Keene State by a slim 44-43 margin, outshooting the Owls 15-6 in the fourth quarter to come back from an earlier deficit. Skidmore also forced 22 Keene State turnovers and converted on 3-of-10 extra-man opportunities.

Joe Nutting and Connor Nolan each tallied three goals to lead the Owls, while Dave Wiedenfeld added three assists. Matthew Lemke was dominant at the face-off 'X', winning 20-of-24 attempts. Chase Chamberlin made 11 saves in the loss.

It was an action-packed game from start to finish, with Nolan striking first for Keene State on their opening possession. At the 8:52 mark, Megnia made the Owls pay for an early penalty, converting the man-up goal, tying the game at one. Munck gave Skidmore the lead just over a minute later, before Keene State came back to tie the game on a Wiedenfeld goal.

Back and forth the teams would go, trading goals throughout the first half. The Owls made their run in the third quarter, opening the period with two quick goals in the first 1:20. Alex Miller got Skidmore on the board in the second half with an individual effort at the 7:52 mark, but Steve Hamel scored the man-down goal for the Owls with seven ticks left in the period, giving Keene State a 10-8 lead entering the final quarter.

The Owls almost tallied another goal to begin the fourth, but Tim Rahill stopped a sure goal by Nutting to keep the margin at two. On the other end, Keene State was called for yet another penalty, its eighth of the afternoon. This one was un-releasable, and the Thoroughbreds took advantage with a pair of man-up goals by Mahoney and Megnia. After Mahoney scored the opening goal of the fourth, Alex Miller forced a turnover on the Keene State end with a sound body check. He picked up the ball and fed Megnia on the other end, as the senior finished an easy chance in front of net to tie the game.

Skidmore put its foot on the gas pedal from there, taking chance after chance in front of net in an effort to tie the game. Munck eventually tallied the game-winner at the 9:52 mark, giving Skidmore an 11-10 lead. Miller, Mahoney, and Shlonsky put the game away with late goals for the 14-10 advantage.

Skidmore will next hit the road for a pair of games, visiting No. 16 RPI in Troy on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
