ITHACA, N.Y.— Ithaca College broke open an 8-8 game with a late second quarter run that extended into the third quarter in an 18-12 Liberty League win over a determined Skidmore College squad Sunday afternoon. The game was rescheduled from March 14.
The Thoroughbreds are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. The #18 Bombers are 3-1 and 1-0.
Ward Mahoney scored four goals to lead Skidmore.
Eric Megnia added two goals, two assists, four ground balls and two caused turnovers and
Alex Miller had two goals on three shots and two ground balls.
After an early 3-1 Ithaca lead, Skidmore charged back with four of the next five goals to take a 5-4 advantage with 1:51 left in the first quarter. Mahoney had
the first and fourth goal in the run. Megnia and
Garrett Munck tallied the other two. Ithaca closed the quarter with a pair of goals to reclaim the lead 6-5.
Miller and
Will Lukas scored the first two goals of the second to put Skidmore back in front 7-6 with 10:34 left in the quarter. Ithaca popped in the last two goals of the quarter to hold a slight 10-8 led at the half.
A man-up goal to open the third by Miller cut it to 10-9. The Bombers went on a 5-0 run to close the period and go up 15-9. The teams traded goals in the fourth for the 18-12 final.
Ithaca had a slight 36-35 shot advantage, while the Thoroughbreds forced 19 Bomber turnovers.
Tim Rahill had nine saves in goal for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds travel to Norwich University Tuesday for a non-league game at 6 p.m.
