ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – A game-winning overtime goal by junior attack
Amanda Orvis capped off a thrilling Skidmore College women's lacrosse team comeback. The Thoroughbreds erased a late three-goal deficit to upset No. 20 Haverford in overtime by a 16-15 score Thursday afternoon.
Skidmore improves to 3-1 on the season, going 2-0 in Florida. Haverford, ranked 20
th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) rankings, drops to 4-2.
Down three goals (15-12) in the final five minutes of regulation, the Thoroughbred offense came alive. With 4:54 to go in the game,
Natalie LaBeau converted on a free position shot as Skidmore cut the deficit to two. LaBeau won the ensuing draw, and 32 seconds later,
Cas Szwajkowski scored, as Skidmore now trailed 15-14.
A few minutes later,
Ellie Daly made a big defensive play, causing a Haverford turnover that gave the ball back to the Thoroughbreds. Orvis would make the Fords pay for their folly on the ensuing possession, tying the game at 15 with 1:47 to go in regulation. In the extra session, Orvis sent the Thoroughbreds home happy with the game-winner, just 1:05 in.
It was a sterling second-half effort for the Thoroughbreds, who also stared down a six-goal, 13-7 deficit early in the period.
Emily Hirsch got the run started with three straight goals in a span of 1:11.
Grace Connerty and
Anna Boogaerts later scored to cap a five-goal spurt, as Skidmore trailed 13-12 at the 12:41 mark. Haverford later scored twice to put the Fords up three, sparking the late Skidmore comeback.

Szwajkowski led the Thoroughbreds with six points, scoring four goals while adding two assists. She also won nine draws. Orvis and Hirsch each scored thrice, while Boogearts and LaBeau tallied two goals apiece. Hirsch and Boogaerts were also 2-of-2 on free position shots. Connerty also scored a goal, her second of the season and
Shelby Boland completed the scoring with a goal and assist. Five different Thoroughbreds (Orvis, Boland, Hirsch, Daly, and
Caroline Kenlon) caused two turnovers. Kenlon picked up the win after making four saves in net. Skidmore out shot Haverford by a 42-26 margin, including a 26-10 margin in the second half and overtime. The Thoroughbreds also won 22-of-32 draws.
Allie Gibbons led Haverford with five goals. Julie Pascarella added six points, via four goals and two assists. Julie Manaetta added five assists and a goal. Amelia Slade was busy in net, making 16 saves in 61:05.
Skidmore will take on another ranked team in its next contest, traveling to No. 19 Ithaca in the Liberty League opener on Saturday, March 17 at noon.
