Skidmore sprints past Westfield State, 17-10

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – A six-goal explosion by senior attack Cas Szwajkowski was more than enough for the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team, who got back on track offensively with a 17-10 victory over Westfield State Monday afternoon.

Skidmore improves to 2-1 on the season. Westfield State drops its first contest of the season, falling to 2-1.

Szwajkowski's six goals pushed her to fourth all-time on the career points list with 191, tied with Skidmore Hall of Famer Charlotte Riggs '94. She's second all-time with 165 career goals.

Natalie LaBeau added four goals and one assist for five points. She also won four draws and caused three turnovers. Zoe Rafalowski-Houseman and Emily Hirsch tallied two goals each. Lilla Seymour, Anna Boogaerts, and Vivian Foley also scored. Amanda Orvis and Shelby Boland tallied two assists each. Caroline Kenlon tallied 13 saves and added nine ground balls for the win. The Thoroughbreds out shot Westfield State by a 36-32 margin, and won 17-of-28 draws.

Sydney Lambert led the Owls with four goals. Elizabeth Navoni added two.

The Owls took an early lead on the Thoroughbreds with a Navoni goal at 24:40, but Skidmore tied things up quickly, taking advantage of a Westfield State yellow card as Rafalowski-Houseman tallied a woman-up goal at 23:45. Nearly 30 seconds later, Rafalowski-Houseman scored again to give Skidmore the lead lead, and Szwajkowski scored her first to give Skidmore a 3-1 advantage.

Westfield State scored twice later in the half, trailing 4-3 at the 13:15 mark. Skidmore then went on a 4-1 run, as Hirsch, Foley, and LaBeau struck to give Skidmore an 8-4 lead. Marissa Nimeskern broke the Skidmore run with 26 seconds left, but Skidmore entered the half with an 8-5 lead.

The Owls scored twice to begin the second half, as Skidmore held a narrow 8-7 lead just 1:05 in. The Thoroughbreds put the game away in the next 19 minutes, outscoring Westfield State 6-1 in that span to take a 14-8 lead. LaBeau and Szwajkowski wraped up the scoring with goals in the last 18 seconds of the 17-10 final.
