Thoroughbreds fall to Hobart in Liberty opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hobart held Skidmore without a field goal for nearly 14 minutes in the second half to pull away for a 67-43 Liberty League win Friday night at the Williamson Center.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 1-4, 0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Statesmen move to 5-1 and 1-0.

Skidmore was led by Ty Lamport who scored 10 points alongside four rebounds and two steals. Jordan Cole added nine points, four rebounds, and three blocks in his first start of the season.

Dan Masino was one of three Statesmen who scored double-digits with double/double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Daniel Cook and Edens Fleurizard both added 12 points each, with Cook contributing nine rebounds in the paint.

Down 33-23 at the half, Skidmore came out hard to score the first five points of the second stanza to cut it to 33-28 at the 18:11 mark.  Thoroughbreds could not catch a break after that, getting whistled for the first seven fouls of the half. Fouls were not the only thing causing problems for the Thoroughbreds who were challenged from the floor, shooting 5-28 in the half (17.9%).

"Tonight was one of those nights. We were undermanned and dealt with foul trouble and unfortunately this group is not at the point where we can overcome that," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. "We never got into any kind of rhythm but credit Hobart , they absolutely outplayed us and deserved to win the game.

"We needed to make it boxing match but unfortunately we forgot our gloves. Now we need to rebound because we have a super physical and super tough RIT team coming in tomorrow."

Skidmore will get to put this one behind them when they return to the Williamson Center Saturday for a 4 p.m. game with RIT.
