SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— A 5-on-3 third period power-goal was the difference in Skidmore's 3-2 loss to Canton in a non-league contest Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The two teams play again Saturday in Canton at 7 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds are 3-2-1, while the Kangaroos are 2-2-1.
Brett Bannister opened the scoring with a first period power-play goal at 17:51 from Reily McIntosh. Skidmore got the equalizer when
Nicolas Stuckless collected a blocked shot and fired one home from in front at 19:22 for his first collegiate goal. Kyle Del Maestro and
William Brochu assisted.
Max Routledge put the Roos back in front at 8:04 of the second from Sean David. Matt Rutigliano tied it with his first collegiate goal at 14:11. After several attempts, Rutigliano floated one over Canton goalie Michael Cerasulo.
Cole Beckstead and
Reid Russell had the helpers.
Canton took advantage of a 5:00 major at the end of the second period and a bench minor to start the third period to go in front for good. Routledge scored his second of the game from Kyler Matthews and Tyson Bruce at 0:29.
Skidmore successfully killed off the rest of the major and tested Cerasulo several times in the final minutes, but couldn't solve him for the equalizer.
Canton outshot the Thoroughbreds 34-32.
Brandon Kasel had 31 saves for Skidmore, while Cerasuolo finished with 30.
