Opening sweep for swimming and diving

RESULTS

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's and women 's swimming and diving teams swept past St. Lawrence University to open the season Friday evening at the Williamson Center.

The women beat the Saints for the first time in 18 seasons 124-116, while the men won for the fifth straight time over SLU 130-77.

The men's 200 Medley Relay team of Nick Meconiates, Josh Finkelman-Mahoney, Carl Mellqvist and Ian Hinkle combined to earn the first event win of the day (1:45.67), while the women's relay of Lexi Benfante, Rachel Olson, Brooke Edwards and Olivia Czelusniak touched second (1:56.80).

Lizzie Day picked up her first win in the 200 Free (2:06.51) with a strong second 100 to pull away, while teammate Emily Favreau earned important points in third (2:08.54). The trio of Rachel Olson, Meredith Wagner and Abbi Brown earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM.  Similarly, the men's group of Brian Borchard, Daryl Kwan and Kinser Bonner answered with a 1-2-3 finish in the same event.  Lexi Benfante, Anabel Szydlik and Abbi Brown repeated the feat in the 200 Back with a strong 1-2-3 finish.

Miles Herman earned his first two college wins with a convincing win in the 1000 Free (10:26.72) and 200 Fly (2:07.44), and was also second in the 200 Breast (2:32.19).  Nick Meconiates picked up a win in the 50 Free (24.23). Olson also won her second individual event, the 200 Breast to cement the Thoroughbred victory (2:30.96). Finkelman-Mahoney also picked up an individual event win in the 200 Breast (2:21.08).

Diving proved to be a strength for the Thoroughbreds with Rachel Adamsky winning 1 meter, while Hannah Krall picked up the victory in 3 Meter.  Noah Fryou took his first two college events, winning both 1 meter and 3 meter.

"I'm excited about the way we started our season, not only with picking up two league wins, but the versatility both our men's and women's teams demonstrated," said Skidmore coach Jill Greenleaf.  "The hard work and effort that the athletes are putting in at practice every day will continue to pay off as we look forward to our upcoming meets, and most importantly at championships in February."

Skidmore is back in the Williamson Center pool Saturday at 1 p.m. against Potsdam.
