Thoroughbreds battle back to beat Ithaca 3-2 in OT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Mariah Redler scored with :31 seconds to play in the first overtime to lead the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 3-2 Liberty League win over Ithaca College Friday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The win leaves the Thoroughbreds (9-6, 4-0 Liberty League) all alone in first place, while the Bombers (8-5, 3-1) drop into a three-way tie for second.

Skidmore has won three straight and six of its last seven games.

Ithaca took a 2-0 lead on a first quarter goal by Morgan Mullen who scored off a rebound and a third quarter goal by Brianna Lennon off a corner at 35:16.

Skidmore never quit. Gabrielle Vaccaro redirected a Sarah Winters shot into the cage at 40:19 to cut the Bomber lead to 2-1. Redler tied when a corner resulted in a scramble in front at 56:15.

The Thoroughbreds dominated the overtime, but Ithaca's defense withstood the challenge.

The Bombers shut down four straight Skidmore overtime corners before the fifth. Sarah Winters sent Redler in one-on-one with Ithaca goalie Savanna Lenker. She made a quick move past Lenker and then got a shot off into the empty net despite two sprawling defenders.

It was the seventh goal in six games for Redler who missed the team's first nine games recovering from an injury.

Skidmore outshot Ithaca 18-6 and didn't allow a Bomber shot after the third quarter. The Thoroughbreds had a 14-3 corner advantage.

Maddy Carre had two saves to remain unbeaten with a 5-0 record. Madeleine Michaels had a pair of defensive saves. Lenker stopped eight shots for Ithaca.

Skidmore travels to Union College on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
