Thoroughbreds begin Classic with sweep

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team opened up action at the Skidmore Classic with a pair of victories, defeating New Rochelle 3-1 and St. John Fisher 3-0, in non-league action at the Williamson Sports Center Friday night.
 
Skidmore improves to 12-4, having won its last four matches, and eight of the last nine.
 
In the first match against New Rochelle, the Thoroughbreds were dominant in their first two sets, before the Blue Angels hit .407 in the third, taking the set. In the fourth set, New Rochelle went on a 6-1 run to cut its deficit to 17-15, but Skidmore closed the door with an impressive 8-1 run.
 
Katy Ehnstrom led the offense with 15 kills, hitting .345. On the other end, Ehnstrom added three total blocks. Caite Canfield recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 20 digs. Allie Dillon added 18 digs of her own. Lily Fitzgerald tallied 22 assists and notched two service aces.
 
In the second match, Skidmore weathered a tough-hitting St. John Fisher team, running away with the first two sets. St. John Fisher went on a 5-0 run midway through the third set, taking a 13-8 lead, before Skidmore chipped away at the deficit. A 5-1 run reduced the deficit to one, before the teams traded points. With St. John Fisher leading 16-14, a pair of Cardinals errors sparked a 5-0 Skidmore run, as the Thoroughbreds grabbed a 19-16 lead. The Cardinals would make a run of their own to tie the set at 22, but Skidmore scored three straight points to win the match.
 
Canfield led the Thoroughbreds in the second match with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Bailey Hutchins added 10. Lauren Wolters paced the offense with 18 assists and added four service aces.
 
Skidmore will wrap up the two-day event on Saturday, taking on Oneonta and Roger Williams.
