Thoroughbreds complete Skidmore Classic sweep

Skidmore defeats Oneonta 3-2 and Roger Williams 3-0, has won six matches in a row

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team completes a four-match sweep of the Skidmore Classic after defeating Oneonta 3-2 and Roger Williams 3-0 on Saturday at the Williamson Sports Center.

Skidmore (14-4) continues its hot stretch, winners of six in a row and nine of the last 10 matches.

Oneonta took Skidmore to the wire in their first match. After Skidmore easily won its first set, Oneonta rallied to take the second in similar fashion. A hot early start in the third set gave Skidmore the victory, with Oneonta pulling away in the fourth to set up the fifth and final set.

In the final set, Oneonta took a quick 3-0 lead, before Skidmore chipped away. The Thoroughbreds would tie the game at 7 on a Caite Canfield kill, beginning a 5-0 run to give Skidmore a 11-7 lead. Three straight points, highlighted by a pair of Katy Ehnstrom kills, would give Skidmore the 15-9 set victory.

Ehnstrom tallied 15 kills, while hitting .424 to lead the Thoroughbreds. Canfield added 13 kills and 12 digs. Lauren Wolters filled the stat sheet with seven kills,18 assists, two service aces and two total blocks. Allie Dillon added 22 digs on the defensive end.

The second match was close throughout despite the final score. Skidmore withstood a late Roger Williams rally to win the first set, and came back from a 16-11 deficit with an 8-1 to take the lead. With the match tied at 22, Canfield tallied back-to-back points for the Thoroughbreds with a kill and service ace, as the Thoroughbreds eventually won the set. Skidmore would slowly pull away in the third set to clinch the victory.

Canfield, the Skidmore Classic Most Valuable Player, tallied 10 kills to lead the scoring, adding nine digs. Wolters once again filled the stat sheet with seven kills, 23 assists, three service aces, and seven digs. Ehnstrom added eight kills while hitting .429, and Dillon led the defense with 10 digs, as both were named to the All-Tournament team.
