Skidmore falls to No. 9 Montclair State in overtime

Gabby Hyman tallies 100th career point, becomes 16th player in program history to do so

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior forward Gabby Hyman scored a milestone goal for the Skidmore College field hockey team, but it wasn't enough as the Thoroughbreds suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to ninth-ranked Montclair State, in non-league action at Wagner Park on a warm Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore falls to 2-3, while Montclair State remains unbeaten at 6-0.

Montclair State scored in the 87th minute, as Kyra Mobley took possession deep in the Skidmore penalty arc, firing a chip shot past Skidmore goalie Elizabeth Coughlin.

It was the conclusion to a wild, back-and-forth contest as Skidmore was looking for a statement victory. The Red Hawks fired the first salvo at 30:33, when off a penalty corner, Elizabeth Cimilluca fired a shot wide from the left side, which Victoria Rossi rerouted to the right corner of the cage.

In the second half, Skidmore took advantage. As play restarted after the time out, senior Marissa Folts fired a long pass from deep within their own end to Hyman, who used her speed to beat the lone defender, firing a long shot just inside of the penalty arc past Montclair State goalie Nicole Andriani at 54:22. The goal gave Hyman her 101st career point, as she became the 16th player in program history to hit the 100-point mark.

Nearly 12 minutes later, Skidmore took a 2-1 lead, after senior Emily Richmond chipped a shot past Andriani, who was aggressively sliding in for a save.

Skidmore's defense fought hard to preserve the lead, but Montclair State would tie things up at two with an Amber Haslett goal with 2:29 to go in regulation.

Skidmore would earn four penalty corners in the overtime session, but Montclair State stood defensively, eventually leading to the game-winner at the tail end of the second extra session.

Montclair State held a 19-14 edge overall in shots. Both teams earned eight penalty corners.

Coughlin played well despite the loss, making 11 saves. Folts and sophomore Natalie Metzger each tallied a defensive save. On the other end, Andriani made seven saves in the victory.

Skidmore remains home for its next matchup, against New Paltz on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
