SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Mariah Redler scored with 6:18 to go in overtime, leading the Skidmore College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over New Paltz, in non-league action at Wagner Park Wednesday afternoon.
Skidmore improves to 3-3 on the season, while New Paltz falls to 4-3.
Midway through the overtime period, a feed into the penalty arc found senior
Gabby Hyman just in front of charging New Paltz goalie Ryan Dowling. Hyman found Redler on the right hand side, who shot into the open net for her third goal of the season and first collegiate game-winner.
The Thoroughbreds struck first in the contest off a penalty corner in the 23
rd minute. Senior
Emily Richmond took the corner, feeding fellow senior
Marissa Folts at the top of the arc. Folts then passed it to Hyman on the left wing, who launched a hard low shot past Dowling.
Skidmore dominated possession from there, but were unable to add to the league. In the 57
th minute, New Paltz got back into the game. Rachel Beam corralled a loose ball on the left wing firing a hard shot across the goalie to the right corner, tying the contest at one. The Hawks had a few chances to take the lead late, but Skidmore goalie
Elizabeth Coughlin stood tall, parrying away a couple of shots to keep the game tied into overtime.
Coughlin finished the contest with eight saves, earning her third win of the season. Dowling also had eight saves in the loss.
New Paltz outscored Skidmore by a narrow 15-14 margin. Skidmore earned a 10-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Thoroughbreds begin Liberty League action in its next contest on Saturday, Sept. 22 against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
