SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— St. Lawrence University edged Skidmore College 2-1 in the Liberty League field hockey opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.

The Thoroughbreds are 3-4 and 0-1, while the Saints are 3-4 and 1-0.

St. Lawrence struck first, taking advantage of a penalty stroke call at 33:59. Lucy Stillman converted the stroke for her fifth goal of the season.

The Saints made it 2-0 at 45:31 when Isabel Thompson attacked on the right side and placed a perfect centering pass to McShane Sneath who scored her second of the season.

Skidmore answered a few minutes later off a corner.
Marissa Folts received the ball and quickly found
Gabby Hyman who blasted one past keeper Sydney Giacin to cut it to 2-1 at 50:07.

The Thoroughbreds continued to apply pressure, but the Saints withstood the attack. Giacin made a sliding stick save on a tip off a corner with 4:30 left to preserve the lead.

Skidmore had a 15-8 shot and 20-3 corner advantage.

Elizabeth Coughlin had five saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Giacin improved to 2-0 with nine saves, including six in the second half.

Next up for Skidmore will be a home match-up with defending national champion and number one ranked Middlebury College on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
