Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong pitching earns Thoroughbreds a split

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Starter Spencer Anderson picked-up his first win of the season and ace reliever Andrew Aikins notched save number four to lead the Skidmore College baseball team to a 2-1 game one win over Clarkson University Sunday afternoon at Castle Diamond. The Golden Knights came back to win the second game 5-1.

With the 2-2 weekend split, Skidmore is 13-17 overall and 8-12 in Liberty League play. Clarkson is 10-12 and 5-7.

In the first game, Anderson allowed one unearned run on seven hits over six innings. The lefty frustrated the Golden Knights with nine strikeouts and no walks.  Aikins has emerged as one of the nation's top relievers. He pitched a scoreless seventh for the save, lowering his ERA to 0.92 over 14 appearances.

Skidmore got both its runs in the second off a Hayden Smith RBI double and an RBI single by Ryan Strickland. Smith was 2-2 for the
game.

Nate Burns and Ben Knauf (two doubles) had two hits each for Clarkson.  Starter Ryan Riley (2-2) went 5.1 innings, allowed two runs on
five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

In game two, the Golden Knights went up 2-0 in the third and added three unearned runs in the eighth for a 5-0 lead.  Smith had an RBI double in the eighth to account for Skidmore's run. Smith had two of Skidmore's four hits, while Jake Hardy was 2-4

Will Potter extended his hit streak to 21 games with a first game double, but went 0-3 in game two. It was the third longest streak in Skidmore history, one off the shared record by Brian Lowry and Justin Morelli set in 2009.

Starter Tim Allen (2-1) lost for the first time this season. He gave up two runs on no hits in two innings, walking four and striking out two. Sam Beck had five scoreless innings of relief, holding the Golden Knights to three hits.

Clarkson starter Ryan Corcoran (2-2) tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, with two hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Mark Bubniak earned his first save of the season.

Skidmore is at Southern Vermont on April 24, before returning home April 28 to start a four game series vs. Rochester.
