Skidmore erases second-half deficit, races past SLU

Thoroughbreds score final 10 goals to erase three-goal second half deficit

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trailing 6-3 in the second half, the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team scored 10 unanswered goals, leading to a 13-6 victory against St. Lawrence in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field on a warm Saturday afternoon.
 
Skidmore (11-5, 7-2 Liberty League) has won its sixth straight contest against Liberty League opponents. The Thoroughbreds can finish no worse than third place in the Liberty League standings and sits one game behind league co-leaders Ithaca and William Smith with one league game to go. St. Lawrence falls to 2-7 in league play, and 4-10 overall.
 
After the contest, Skidmore honored its seniors, Marisa Caponi, Emily Schlicht, and Taylor Goodwill.
 
Eight players tallied two or more points for the Thoroughbreds. Amanda Orvis led the group with four points on two goals and two assists. Shelby Boland bounced back with three points, on a goal and two assists. Cas Szwajkowski, Lilla Seymour, Natalie LaBeau, and Emily Hirsch tallied two goals apiece. Caponi and Grace Connerty each tallied a goal and an assist for two points. Connerty also caused three turnovers.
 
Caroline Kenlon had another solid game in net, turning away 13 shots for the victory. She was also solid at eight meters for the second straight contest, as St. Lawrence went just 2-for-8 in free position shots.
 
Kayla Schmalz led St. Lawrence with four points on three goals and one assist. Campbell Armstrong tallied two goals. Olga Lukas stopped 11 shots in the loss.
 
With the game tied at three to begin the second half, St. Lawrence came out with a three goals in a 4:02 span, including a pair of goals 18 seconds apart. After calling a timeout to talk things over, Skidmore responded with a 10-0 run to put the game away, as the Saints were held off the board in the final 25:58 of the contest. Seymour got things started with her goal at 23:26. Six minutes later, LaBeau brought the Thoroughbred deficit to one (6-5) on a free position shot. After forcing a Saints turnover, Skidmore tied the game at six after Boland found Hirsch with the goal at the 14:38 mark. After Lukas made a fine save on a Szwajkowski shot, she tried to quickly advance the ball up field, but Connerty made a leaping play to intercept the pass. She then changed direction and found a charging Orvis for the goal at 13:24, giving Skidmore the 7-6 lead.
 
Skidmore would keep its foot on the gas pedal, as Seymour scored on the free position opportunity, taking a two-goal advantage. Boland and LaBeau would then score 1:09 apart to push the lead to 10-6. Connerty would convert on Skidmore's 13th free position chance, stretching the lead to five at 8:11, then Hirsch scored with the man-disadvantage, doubling up on the Saints, 12-6. Szwajkowski would wrap up the scoring for Skidmore with her goal on a feed from Caponi at 1:49. St. Lawrence would have one final attempt at net with a free position chance in the final second, but Kenlon would come up big with a save stick-side to end the contest.
Skidmore outshot St. Lawrence by a 29-26 margin, including a 24-19 shots on goal advantage. The Thoroughbreds would win 13 of 21 draws and go 6-for-13 on free position shots.

Skidmore will travel to Geneva to take on No. 18 William Smith in the regular season finale next Saturday, at 3 p.m. Skidmore would finish second and receive a bye into the Liberty League semifinals with a victory.
