Marathon Win gives Thoroughbreds Liberty League Split

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College baseball team went four extra innings for a 2-1 game 1 win over Clarkson University in a Liberty League double header  Saturday at Castle Diamond. The Golden Knights won game 2 5-3.

The Thoroughbreds are 12-16 and 7-11 in conference play. Clarkson is 9-11 and 4-6. The teams close out the four-game set at 12 p.m. Sunday at Castle Diamond.

In the first game, Skidmore patiently waited out Clarkson ace Will Coleman, while using some decent pitching of its own.
Skidmore, playing as the visiting team, took a 1-0 lead in the first. Will Potter opened with a double then moved to third and then scoring on consecutive ground outs. Clarkson tied in on a fielder's choice in the sixth and the seven inning game extended to 10
innings.

In the 10th, Shawn Klier singled and was replaced by Justin Bottcher. Bottcher moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hayden Smith's fly to right was deep enough to plate Bottcher for the 2-1 lead.

Reliever Jacob Berish (4-2) tossed his third scoreless inning of relief in the 10th to secure the win.

Starter Jay Gamboa went 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits, with three walks and four strikeouts. Andrew Aikins had 1.2 inning of scoreless relief, before Berish came on to close out the game.

Coleman went the distance for Clarkson, allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and 14 strikeouts.

The Golden Knights scored four runs in the first to take charge of game 2. The teams traded runs in the second, before Skidmore scored two in the fifth on a Klier RBI single and a Smith RBI double to cut it to 5-3. Clarkson reliever Mike Connor shut the door with three perfect innings of relief.

Smith was 2-4 with an RBI and Skidmore starter Spencer Meyer (0-4) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings. James Kilzer had two innings of hitless relief.
