ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team had another solid all-around performance, remaining undefeated after a 18-8 victory over Muhlenberg, in non-league action at Scotty Wood Stadium on a chilly Tuesday afternoon.
Skidmore (4-0) is off to its best start since 2011 and has outscored opponents by an impressive 75-17 margin. Muhlenberg (2-1) is handed its first loss of the season.
Four different Thoroughbreds scored three goals in a balanced attack. Junior
Cas Szwajkowski led the Thoroughbreds with five points on three goals and two assists. First-year
Shelby Boland added three goals and one assist for four points. Sophomore
Natalie LaBeau and first-year
Emily Hirsch added three goals apiece. LaBeau also added three ground balls and won seven draws, while Hirsch added four draws. Senior
Marisa Caponi and first-year
Sophia Hagstromer added two goals each. Junior
Gianna Muscari and sophomore
Abby Sanford also scored, with junior
Anna Boogaerts adding an assist. Sophomore
Caroline Kenlon was stellar in net with a career-high 11 saves.
Jordy Bonvini led the Mules with five goals. Amanda Tullo added a goal and two assists for three points. Jordan Steinroeder made three saves in the loss.
Both teams traded goals in the first eight minutes of the contest. Szwajkowski struck 45 seconds into the contest on Skidmore's first shot of the game. The unassisted goal gave Skidmore the early lead. Bonvini knotted things up at one nearly three minutes later, but Sanford gave Skidmore a lead at the 25:06 mark.
Bonvini tied the game at two despite being a man down at the 22:52 mark, before Skidmore tallied three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 20:42 to go. Hirsch, LaBeau, and Szwajkowski scored during the Skidmore run. Muhlenberg broke the run with a goal at 13:43, before Skidmore got two more to stretch the lead to 7-3 at the 1:52 mark. Bonvini would score her third with 35 seconds to go in the half, bringing the Mules within three (7-4). On a Thoroughbred reset with five seconds left, Szwajkowski found Hirsch, who beat the game clock with her goal, giving Skidmore an 8-4 lead into the break.
The second half was all Skidmore, scoring the first three goals to take an 11-4 lead at the 25:12 mark. The Thoroughbreds would tally a pair of goals after the Mules responded with a goal, taking a 13-5 lead. Muhlenberg scored to make it 14-6 (17:09 mark), but Skidmore would answer with another 3-0 run, taking its biggest lead of the game at 16-6. The Mules would tally a pair of goals to bring the deficit under single digits, but the Thoroughbreds tallied a pair of goals in the final 2:09 to secure the victory.
Skidmore outshot Muhlenberg by a 30-25 margin, including a 22-19 advantage at shots on net. The Thoroughbreds also won 18 of 27 draw controls. Skidmore was 18-for-24 on clear opportunities, while the Mules were 17-for-23.
Skidmore will complete the road swing with an early season test at No. 24 Rowan, this Thursday at 11 a.m.
