GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 17-10 to No. 24 Rowan, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
Skidmore falls to 4-1 on the season and will begin Liberty League action at home against No. 7 Ithaca Saturday at noon. Rowan improves to 3-1 with the win.
Natalie LaBeau led the Thoroughbreds with three points, tallying two goals and an assist.
Cas Szwajkowski and
Shelby Boland each added a pair of goals.
Anna Boogaerts added a goal and an assist for two points.
Lilla Seymour,
Kathleen Hanna, and
Abby Sanford also registered into the score sheet with goals.
Emily Hirsch grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers, winning five draw controls.
Caroline Kenlon was busy in net with 11 saves and 10 ground balls in the hard-fought decision.
Taylor Gretz led Rowan with six points on a pair of goals and four assists. Nicole Mickendrow, Kim Doyle, and Maddie Bray each tallied four goals. Erin Horner registered 11 saves for the win.
The Owls struck first with a goal in the game's first minute, but Szwajkowski and Seymour would respond for the Thoroughbreds with goals, giving Skidmore a 2-1 lead at the 25:34 mark. Rowan would tie the game at two, before Sanford gave Skidmore another lead (3-2) on an unassisted goal at 23:10.
Rowan responded with a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. The Thoroughbreds would end the first half with Boland's first goal of the game with 2:36 to go, as Skidmore trailed by two at the half. The second half began with Rowan scoring three in a row for a five-point lead (9-4), before LaBeau got Skidmore on the board in the second half at 22:46. The Owls added four goals, taking their largest lead of the game at 13-5, midway through the second half. The Thoroughbreds would respond with four straight goals, including a pair of man-down goals by Szwajkowski and LaBeau 59 seconds apart, as Skidmore cut the deficit to four (13-9) at the 8:37 mark. Rowan and Skidmore would score a goal in the next 2:37, before the Owls pulled away, scoring the last three goals of the game.
Rowan outshot Skidmore by a 38-31 margin and won 17 of 29 draws. Each team converted 16-of 21 clear attempts.
