Thoroughbreds battle for No. 1

First place on the line for Skidmore this weekend, hosting William Smith and RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – First place in the Liberty League standings is on the line this weekend, as the Skidmore College women's basketball team gears up for a crucial weekend against William Smith and RIT. The Thoroughbreds host William Smith on Friday at 6 p.m., before finishing the home portion of the regular season against RIT on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Saturday's home finale will serve as the annual Big Green Scream event, as well as Senior Day for the Thoroughbreds. The first 250 fans will receive a free T-shirt commemorating the event. There are other giveaways at the event, including a 32-inch smart TV. Admission to the game is free. As part of the Senior Day festivities, the Thoroughbreds will honor the 2018 senior class, guards Ari Fustini and Veronica Moceri, and forwards Kelly Donnelly and Caite Opfer, before tipoff. Both contests this weekend will have live stats and video for those watching from afar.

Skidmore (12-9, 10-4 Liberty League) mostly controls its own destiny in the race for a possible second straight Liberty League regular season title with four games to go. The Thoroughbreds are in a three-way tie with Ithaca and Vassar for second place in the league standings, with league leader RIT a game ahead at 11-3. Skidmore has swept Ithaca in the season series, but have dropped both games against Vassar. St. Lawrence, Skidmore's opponent next weekend, is a half-game behind at 9-4.

In the Thoroughbreds' last game, a strong defensive effort in the first three quarters was not enough against Vassar, coming up just short in a bruising 55-51 contest on Tuesday. Donnelly paced all scorers with a 23-point, 11-rebound effort, securing her fifth double-double of the season. Moceri also had a strong afternoon with 15 points and four rebounds.

Donnelly remains among the league leaders in a few statistical categories. The senior leads the league in scoring (20.0 points) and field goal percentage (48.6%), and is in the top-four in rebounds (8.4), steals (2.3), and minutes per game (34.2). Moceri has shown recent success at the free throw line, moving to second in the league in free throw percentage (82.5). She has made 32-of-33 shots (96.9%) from the charity stripe in the last four games and is second on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game. Fustini is among the league's best turnover-averse players, sporting a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio with 3.6 assists per game.

William Smith (12-9, 6-8 Liberty League) is hanging in the race to the postseason, sitting in a tie with RPI in sixth place. The Herons have turned things around after a rough 0-5 league start, going 6-3 in the last nine games. William Smith is third in the league in scoring at 64.5 points per game, but is ninth in points allowed at 62.4.

Mia Morrison leads the team in scoring at 18.2 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounds at 9.3. Kendra Quinn-Moultrie is second in scoring at 9.7 points and in rebounds with 5.1. Juliana Gamboa and Emma Gallagher share the team lead in assists with 2.4.

RIT (17-4, 11-3 Liberty League) is currently in first place in the league standings, and is receiving votes in both the WBCA and d3hoops.com polls. The Tigers recently lost a tight game to Ithaca on Tuesday, snapping their six-game win streak. RIT will travel to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar in another crucial game on Friday before coming to Skidmore on Saturday.

The Tigers lead the league in scoring at 72.4 points per game and have the best scoring margin, beating teams on an average of 15.9 points per game. Individually, the Tigers boast four double-digit scorers, led by Cori Okada and her 13.5 points per game. She is also the most sure-handed guard in the league, with league-topping marks in both assists (4.4) and assist/turnover ratio (2.6). Jessica Glaz is second on the team with 13.4 points per game, with Tara Lynch in third at 13.2 points. Rounding out the foursome is Sabrina Wolfe, who has 11.6 points. Amanda Olsen leads the team in rebounding at 6.4.

The Thoroughbreds will look to bounce back after a 76-61 loss to the Tigers in Rochester on Jan. 12. Before then, the Thoroughbreds had won the last pair of games between the two teams.
