Skidmore knocks off #12 UMASS Boston in OT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Freshman Brandon Borges scored 1:22 into overtime and classmate Brian Kowalski stopped 41 shots to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 3-2 New England Hockey Conference win over 12th ranked UMASS Boston.

The Thoroughbreds have won three straight to move to 5-16-1 overall and 3-11-1 in the NEHC.  The Beacons drop to 14-8 and 9-6. The win avenges a 7-1 home loss to UMB on Jan. 12 and a 5-2 loss in Boston on Nov. 18.

After a scoreless first period, Adam Moodie put Skidmore up 1-0 on a backdoor pass from Tim Allen at 10:44. Corey Morgan had the second assist.

The Beacons nearly tied it early in the third when Zack Bross got loose on a short-handed breakaway that Kowalski stopped cold.

The league's top offense finally got on the board to tie it 1-1 at 8:14 of the third when Nolan Redler scored his 18th of the season from Bross and Colin Larkin off a scramble in front.  Skidmore responded when Max Hegge tallied his second goal of the year at 14:46 from Connor Pelkey and Matt Wolf.

The Beacons took advantage of a late penalty to tie it 2-2 at 15:46. Larkin one-timed it for his 20th of the season from Nick Albano and Bross.

In overtime, Pelkey fired one in from the point that handcuffed UMB goalie Bailey MacBurnie. Borges quickly reacted to the loose puck for his seventh of the season. Kayser Raei had the second assist.

UMB outshot Skidmore 43-34. Kowalski stopped the first 34 shots he saw, including all 19 he faced in the second period. MacBurnie finished with 31 saves.

The Thoroughbreds will honor their seniors in tomorrow's home final against Babson. Puck drops at 4 p.m. The Beacons travel to Hobart for a 4 p.m. game.
