SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team closes out the 2018 calendar year with a visit from Liberty League foe Vassar on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Skidmore (2-7, 1-1 Liberty League) began the league season with an impressive North Country split two weekends ago. After dropping the opener to St. Lawrence on Friday, the Thoroughbreds responded with a resounding 74-52 victory over Clarkson on Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds have been solid statistically on the defensive end this season, among the national leaders in opponent 3-point shooting percentage, with teams shooting a paltry 24.2 percent from beyond the arc. Opponents are also shooting 37.1 percent from the field.
Individually,
Jessica Centore has been on a scoring binge, twice recording a career-high in points in three games. She tallied a then-career high 15 points against Clarkson and followed it up with 18 points against Middlebury last Saturday. The junior leads the team in scoring (9.1), shooting percentage (.447), steals per game (2.8) and blocked shots (six).
Haley English is second in scoring with 8.7 points per game, while also leading the team in assists with 2.8.
Sydney Tsutsui is third in scoring with 7.2 points.
Lilly Berg leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game, with
Taylor Ong right behind with 6.2 rebounds.
Vassar comes into the midweek game with a 5-2 record overall, having split its first two league games. The Brewers began the league season with a loss at Ithaca, but rebounded with a victory at William Smith.
Vassar is one of the league's best offenses, averaging 70.7 points per game. They also allow a league-worst 68.6 points per game. Individually, the Brewers sport one of the league's best post threats in Sophie Nick, who is among the league leaders in both scoring (17.9 points), rebounding (10.4 boards), and field goal percentage (.495). She's also a perfect 21-for-21 from the charity stripe this season. Isa Peczuh leads the league in 3-point percentage (.464) and is second in scoring at 15.4 points per game. Jackie Cenan (15.0) and Ryan DeOrio (10.0) round out the other double-digit scorers.
Skidmore has won four of the last seven games between the teams in the all-time series. Last season, Vassar won both regular season contests, but Skidmore responded with a resounding defensive effort in the Liberty League Semifinal, a 60-45 victory at the Williamson Sports Center.
