SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team got back into the win column Sunday afternoon, defeating Lebanon Valley College in three grueling sets (29-27, 26-24, 25-17), held at the Williamson Sports Center.
Skidmore improves to 15-7, while Lebanon Valley falls to 11-9.
The Thoroughbreds had to come back to win all three sets. In the first, the Flying Dutchmen held an 18-11 lead, before Skidmore came back with a 10-2 spurt to take the 21-20 lead. With Skidmore leading 24-23, Lebanon Valley scored two straight points, putting Skidmore at the brink. Skidmore would rally with kills by
Lily Fitzgerald and
Bailey Hutchins, then, with the score tied at 27, two straight Skidmore points closed the set out.
The second set was much of the same, with the Flying Dutchmen coming out to two straight points. The Thoroughbreds made runs of 5-0 and 4-0, en route to a 21-17 lead. LVC would storm back to take a 24-23 lead, once again putting Skidmore on the brink of dropping the set. Skidmore would respond with three hard-fought points, closing the set on a
Katy Ehnstrom kill.
LVC once again stormed out to an early lead in the third, scoring the first four points. With the Flying Dutchmen leading 12-9, Skidmore scored 14 of the next 15 points to flip the game, holding the largest lead in any set at 23-13.
Caite Canfield would eventually end the match with a powerful kill to snap the Thoroughbred losing streak.
Ehnstrom and Canfield would tally double-digit kills to lead the Skidmore offense. Ehnstrom led with 14, while Canfield notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
Sophia Hettler would add a season-high 11 digs.
Lauren Wolters paced the offense with 21 assists, adding four service aces.
Allie Dillon added 24 digs to pace the defense.
Skidmore returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Middlebury at the Williamson Sports Center at 7 p.m.
