Thoroughbreds fall to Middlebury

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team fell to Middlebury in three sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-22) Tuesday night, in non-league action at the Williamson Sports Center.

Skidmore falls to 14-8, while Middlebury improves to 11-3.

The Thoroughbreds were led by Katy Ehnstrom, who tallied 10 kills while hitting .269. Sophia Hettler added eight. Lauren Wolters tallied a team-leading 17 assists. Caite Canfield led defensively with 14 digs.

Sarah Staver led Middlebury with 16 kills.

Middlebury got off to a 7-1 start in the first set, but the Thoroughbreds were able slowly to cut at the deficit, trailing only 14-13 midway through. The Panthers would then tally five of the next seven points to get some separation, and would trade points with Skidmore before the Thoroughbreds tallied three consecutive points, with the deficit once again sitting at one (21-20). Middlebury closed the set with a 4-2 burst, and would continue that momentum into the second set, winning 25-11.

The third set was once again tight, with Skidmore once again going on an early run, tying the set at 10. Middlebury would then go on a small run to get some distance in the score, before Skidmore rallied with a run of its own to keep things close. Both teams would trade points late, but Skidmore could not get a late run as Middlebury finished the match.

The Thoroughbreds get right back into action on Thursday, hosting Hartwick at the Williamson Sports Center at 7 p.m.
